Our Story

How it all started...

On February 15, 1867, a group of black men and women (fourteen to be exact) left Washington Baptist Church walking a few miles, until they came to a grove of nice shady trees where everyone agreed it was a good place to worship God freely and all together.   In that group of fourteen was the Rev. Peter Shorter who served as the first pastor, and they founded Shady Grove Baptist Church…because God had led them to a shady place located on a grove. For eight years they worshipped in the Brush Arbor until they were able to build a small white-frame church, under the leadership of Rev. J.O. Allen, in 1875. In 1961, under the leadership of Rev. S.M. Glover, a new church building was raised. On December 10, 2000 we marched into the current church building.

Expanding the vision...

Shady Grove Baptist Church established a new website to reach people all over the world through social media.

Where we are headed...

  • SGBC celebrated 155 years of Christian service February, 2022. Like our ancestors, we trusted God all through the 2021 year because it was only “He” that could bring us through a full year of pandemic.
  • We  added two new members one being a Minister during the pandemic.
  • Began live stream worship services via YouTube June 13, 2021.
  • We returned to in-person Sunday morning worship services on Homecoming Day of August 22, 2021. Homecoming take-out lunches were available from two food trucks in church parking lot. (All recommended CDC guidelines were followed).
  • August 2021 we purchased and installed large view screens and projection system in church Sanctuary.
  • Pastor hosted two drive-by boxed lunch distributions, which allowed him to personally see and greet members in their cars.
  • Garden ministry distributed over 200 bags of fresh vegetables to senior church/community members.
